Science Planning and Coordination
Mission

The Science Planning and Coordination Branch serves as the Branch that provides overall support in planning, development and review of scientific programs. Implements agency policy in relation to the NOAA and NMFS Strategic Plans and associated documents; manages the strategic and implementation planning processes for the Science Center and Regional Office, updates input to regional Strategic and Operational Plans annually; identifies strengths and weaknesses in programs to respond to national and regional needs; and coordinates the design of new strategies and approaches. Organizes and coordinates scientific program reviews by internal and external review panels. Provides leadership for region-wide strategic planning and regional involvement in national strategic planning activities.


Develops strategy and coordinates liaison activities and research partnerships with fishery management councils, federal and state agencies, national science organizations, universities, and other stakeholders. Provides assistance to the Science Director in organizing briefings, meetings, conferences, and other special events with user groups. Supports the Regional Public Relations Staff by reviewing fishery management and other scientific and technical material designed for public dissemination, maintains a listing of external events, ensures proper Center representation of NMFS and consistency in the communication of NMFS policies and services.

Serves as a vital link between NMFS offices to clarify directives and requirements, coordinates a career planning process which includes training and individual development plans, coordinates activities and provides information concerning position management and performance management, develops and maintains databases, develops and maintains a network of scientists for the purpose of assistance and cooperation in its programs, and coordinates the regional NMFS rotational assignment program and conflict resolution/mediation service.
