| About RBS program |
Welcome to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Recreational Billfish Survey System
(RBS) Home Page. The RBS is an application that has been collecting data on recreational
billfish tournaments in the western North Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and U.S. territories in the
Caribbean since 1972. Subsequently, tournaments that take place in the Bahamas were als included.
The RBS is the primary source of U.S recreational billfish catch and effort statistics used to fullfil
annual reporting requirements to both domentic and international agencies and is an important source
of data for developing abundance indices and determining population trends of Atlantic billfish.
Federal regulations now require all Atlantic billfish tournaments to register with NOAA Fisheries
each year and, "if selected", to resport their fishing results to the SEFSC after completion of the event.
All billfish tournaments are selected for reporting. Tournaments are supplied with a registration and
summary form (OMB # 0648-0323) designed to collect all the information necessary to meet NOAA's monitoring
and reporting obligations.
