The Marine Mammal Molecular Genetics Lab (MMMGL) is composed of technicians and graduate students utilizing and developing various molecular techniques to help study and understand aspects of cetacean biology, primarily dealing with conservation and management implications. An ongoing project at the MMMGL is to work along with the other NOAA Fisheries Service labs in both the Southeast and Northeast regions, as well as the stranding networks, to share and contribute information that is relevant to marine mammal issues in our area of the country. We use our genetics techniques and lab resources to identify previously unknown animals that strand along the coastal southeastern U.S.
