The Beaufort Lab researches both corals and reef fish, including studies of:
- density of corals off the Carolinas, where the transitional waters of both tropical/sub-tropical waters south of Cape Canaveral (Southeast and Caribbean province) and cool temperate waters north of Cape Hatteras (Middle Atlantic Seaboard) may be an ideal location to attempt to detect the early effects of climate change
- where reef fish spawn
- reproduction of reef fish
- life history of reef fish, including growth rates of young fish, how big fish are at certain ages, and more
- reef fish in southeast U.S. continental shelf waters, through the Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (SEFIS) group
Fisheries research at the Beaufort Laboratory is used to further the Nation's conservation objectives, including under the Coral Reef Conservation Act.
