ABOUT THIS REPOSITORY
In the process of preparing the book “Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes: An
Identification Guide for the Western Central North Atlantic” by W. J. Richards
(Editor) that was published in 2005 by CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, a large
number of illustrations were scanned for use in the book. This included all of
the illustrations from the book “Ontogeny and Systematics of Fishes” by H. G. Moser
et al. (eds.). that was published in 1984 by the American Society of Ichthyologists
and Herpetologists (ASIH) as Special Publication No. 1.
These illustrations were archived at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center
(SEFSC) following the book’s publication and most of the illustrations are from
the public domain as they were original drawings funded by the U. S. Government.
However, prior to publication permission should be sought from the Secretary of
ASIH. Several hundred new drawings have been prepared for the Richards book by
the SEFSC staff illustrator, Jack Javech, and these are included. For the
“Ontogeny and Systematics of Fishes” book, the illustrations are listed by figure
number only with the prefix Ahl that stands for Ahlstrom for whom the book was
dedicated. Two errors in this book have been corrected – Fig. 163B had the
pectoral fins omitted and they are restored in this corrected original, and
Fig 164D and 164C had their illustrations interchanged and this is corrected, too.
For the Javech illustrations the following is provided: illustration number,
family, genus, species, length, scale used, collection data (label on vial), and
date inked. The Javech drawings are part of the public domain, but permission
should be sought from CRC Press and the SEFSC before publishing.
A resizing process has been applied to the original drawings to produce
downloadable copies of each image in different sizes and formats, as follows:
- Original size (TIF format)
- Large (800x800 pixels JPG)
- Medium (300x300 JPG)
- Thumbnail (150x150 JPG)
In addition to the information mentioned above, the system provides the size
of each image in KB and in the case of original drawings, the width and length in pixels.
