Who can help set up my new computer? Electronic equipment that is purchased is accountable property and falls under the authority of NOAA property requirements and regulations. This equipment must be inventoried and assigned a USDC identification number that will remain with
the equipment through its life cycle. Referred to the Center Property Manager for registration.

The IRM Division has trained personnel available to help set up computers. They will install the necessary software for accessing the Center's LAN, the E-Mail system, and connections to the Internet.

What general software do I need to be
functional at the Center? The software required for accessing the Center's LAN, E-Mail system, and connections to the Internet and Host servers are made available by the IRM Division.
- The Putty
Utility provides a secure connection for Internet, Intranet, Host servers and TCP/IP access.
- Download Thunderbird
for Internet, E-Mail, and Web communications.
- Internet Explorer for Internet, Outlook Mail, and Web communications.

Anti-Virus software is available for my computer? |
| The NOAA IT Security Office has all the McAfee Anti-Virus Software
available for download. However you must be a member of
the SEFSC Local Area Network to use this site. See instructions on
how to access the SEFSC LAN from a remote location. You need to sign
in to the SEFSC Web Site. McAfee is the licensed software used at the SEFSC. |

Who do I see if my computer breaks? The IRM Division has trained personnel available to help analyze malfunctioning computers. They will assist in the repair of a computer or suggest alternative solutions. See Who Should You Call | |
What do I do with a computer
I do not need? Any electronic equipment that
is no longer needed by an individual is first made available to any other
Center employee. If there is no use for the equipment, all such equipment
must be placed in Excess for disposal. See Surplus Old Equipment

How do I connect my computer to the LAN
and Internet?
When a computer is initially setup the operating system
will be configured with access to the SEFSC local area network. This will give you access to the Internet.
During computer start up a window will be displayed asking for your LAN User-Id and Password. Upon successful completion of the log-in process, mount points and designated directories
for your user account will be available. If you require additional
read or write privileges to a specific LAN directory please contact the
SEFSC LAN administrator. |

How do I connect my computer to the Delphi?
Specific personnel (users) having a requirement for data
collected under the many fishery programs are allowed access to the Delphi server.
These users include: NMFS federal employees, contractors working for NMFS, Fisheries Management Councils, and Marine Fisheries Commissions, as well as personnel under the State Cooperative Program. The individual's computer must have TCP/IP applications software and a NIC
card installed to connection through the SEFSC LAN, NMFS WAN, and the Internet. These are
typically loaded on all NOAA/NMFS systems.

To dial into SEFSC using a modem, you will need to contact Mal Brassfield
and be assigned a user account with password. If you have a DSL type
connection, then you can obtain a direct
high speed connection to our servers and NMFS E-mail by installing the Cisco VPN client
on your system. |

How do I connect my computer to the Web?
The standard communications protocol for accessing the Internet and Web is the Netscape Communicator. This application will be installed on all NMFS
personal computers for access to the NMFS E-Mail system. Several in house applications
still require the Netscape 4.75 version to function correctly. A second choice for a web browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer, which comes installed on most Microsoft operating systems. |

Can I share files on my computer with others?
There are methods for sharing directories and files on
your computer with others. Consult with the IRM Division's LAN administrator for assistance
on setting up your computer to allow others access to your files. |

How
do I find my computer's IP address?
When using any Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) interface, an Internet
Protocol (IP) address (four part number, separated by periods) is
required. An IP address is assigned to each user's local desk-top,
work-station, or local server. If you do not know or forget your IP address, it can be displayed.

How can I find and change the owner name
of my computer? Do to the wide varieties, makes, and models of desktop, laptop, and notebook computers, the process of changing your computer's owner name, work group or description may very. With most windows models, the use of the 'Help' option for the particular computer is the best way to view your
computer's Configuration, Identification, and Access Control options.

How do I backup my computer? There is a local server on the LAN that has been designated for client/workstation backups. The procedure for making backups of your computer may differ depending on your operating system. Consult with the IRM group LAN personnel to get information on performing backups to your computer.
