| Our Computer Center |
|
The Information Resources Management Division (IRM) provides the information technology
infrastructure needed to support the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and NOAA. Our data center hosts millions of fisheries dependent and independent data that have been collected since the early sixties. These data are hosted on state of the art equipment using a wide variety of
operating systems and relational databases to support a diverse community of customers. In addition, we strive to maintain reliable and fast communications throughout the region, having recently connected to the Internet 2 network, our nation's information superhighway.

| Getting a User Account |
| To access one of the SEFSC computers, an account must be established on that
system. Each user is required to have an individual account on the host
server or work-station they need to access. And, each user is required to
read the Protection
of Confidential Fisheries Statistic document and sign a Statement of Nondisclosure form on file at the
SEFSC. For an user to establish an account, he
must submit a completed application form "SEFSC

Access to the SEFSC computer facilities can
be obtained from local, regional, national, and international locations
through the use of Local Area Networks ( LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs),
Internet telecommunications, and dial-in telecommunications.
Offices that have a LAN in place can
connect microcomputers and peripherals to the network using the
recommended Novell LAN Workplace or other Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) software. These software packages will
enable you to connect to a host computer using TCP/IP. |
Oracle
is a database management system that resides on the SEFSC Servers for the purpose
of providing a depository for data collected throughout the Region. Presently the production ORACLE database, named as the Southeast Fisheries Information Network ( SEFIN ) is a
single database that incorporates data encompassing all the different collection systems.
