Equipment Specific Lockout/Tagout Procedures

 
Types of Equipment Lockout/Tagout Procedures
   
Air Cooled Condensors

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

3. Valve off refrigerant and lockout/tagout.

4. Verify lockout/tagouts.

5. If refrigerant is to be removed, then follow proper reclaim procedures.

6. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Air Dryer Cooler for Compressors

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

3. Close compressed air tank valve and lockout/tagout.

4. Bleed off air in unit.

5. Verify lockout/tagouts.

6. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Condensate Receivers

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect to pumps and switches and lockout/tagout.

3. If hydraulic, then valve off fluid, bleed pressure and lockout/tagout.

4. If pneumatic, then valve off air supply, bleed air and lockout/tagout.

5. Valve off condensate supply and return and lockout//tagout.

6. Verify lockout/tagouts.

7. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Control Valves

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. If pneumatic, then valve off air supply, bleed air and lockout/tagout.

3. If electric, then open electrical disconnect and lockout/tagout.

4. Verify lockout/tagouts.

5. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagout.

 

   
Cooling Towers

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect to pumps, automatic fill device, and control devices and lockout/tagouts.

3. Valve off condensate supply line and return lines and lockout/tagout.

4. Valve off supply water to tower and lockout/tagout.

5. If backflow preventor is used on supply, then valve off and lockout/tagout.

6. Verify lockout/tagout.

7. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Electric Air Compressors

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

3. Close compressed air tank valve and lockout/tagout.

4. Open relief valve to tank and bleed off air in tank.

5. If dual piston, follow manufacturers procedures if working on pistons.

6. Verify lockout/tagouts.

7. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Elevators

 

1. Notify affected facility personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. If a shutdown is necessary, then open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

3. If elevator is hydraulic, then open electrical disconnect to hydraulic pump and lockout/tagout.

4. Verify lockout/tagouts.

5. When work is complete, notify are personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

 

   
Emergency Generators

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect to switching relay and lockout/tagout.

3. Open electric disconnect to electric output and lockout/tagout.

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

3. Valve off forced water or chilled water and lockout/tagout.

4. If working on fan coil control valve, then follow manufacturers procedures for many are spring loaded.

5. Verify lockout/tagouts.

6. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Fume Exhaust Hood

 

1. Notify laboratory manager that exhaust hood will be worked on.

2. Laboratory manager must ensure all materials are removed from area.

3. Locate exhaust fan motor control.

4. Lockout/tagout electrical disconnect.

5. Tagout exhaust hood and inform laboratory personnel of repairs being made.

6.  If plumbing work is to be performed, then valve off water supply and lockout/tagout.

7. Verify lockout/tagouts.

8. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Heat Pumps

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect to heat pump and condensor and lockout/tagout.

3. Valve off refrigerant and lockout/tagout.

4. Verify lockout/tagouts.

5. If refrigerant is to be removed, then follow proper reclaim procedures.

6. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
Heating Boilers

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Valve off fuel source (e.g., gas, oil) and lockout/tagout.

3. Open all electric disconnects to boiler, controls, pumps, circulators and receivers and lockout/tagout.

4. If forced hot water boiler, then valve off backflow preventor water supply and lockout/tagout (drain boiler of water).

5. If steam boiler, then valve off backflow preventer water supply and lockout/tagout (displace steam pressure via safety relief valve).

6. Verify lockout/tagouts.

7. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

   
 Hot Water Heaters

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Valve off fuel source (e.g., gas, oil) and lockout/tagout. 
3. If electric heater, then open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.
4. Open electrical disconnect to circulators and controls and lockout/tagout.
5. Valve off water makeup and hot water discharge and lockout/tagout.

6. Verify lockout/tagouts.

7. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.

 

 

   
HVAC Systems

 

1. Notify affected personnel of lockout/tagout, as appropriate.

2. Open electric disconnect to unit and lockout/tagout.

3. Valve off forced water, chilled water or steam and lockout/tagout.

4. If unit has energy recovery coil, valve off supply and return lines and lockout/tagout.

5. Open electric disconnect to pumps and lockout/tagout.

6. If unit has electrostatis filter, then open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

7. If unit has electric re-heat, then open electric disconnect and lockout/tagout.

8. Verify lockout/tagouts.

9. When work is complete, notify area personnel and remove lockout/tagouts.
