GUIDANCE FOR VICTIM ASSESSMENT USING THE

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)

 

BEFORE using the AED the victim MUST be:

UNCONSCIOUS

PULSELESS

NOT BREATHING SPONTANEOUSLY

  • Place AED to victims Left side and Power On.

  • Establish unresponsiveness (If responsive, AED may be turned off).

  • Ensure that Emergency Response has been notified.

  • Position the victim and open the airway.

  • Check for existence and adequacy of spontaneous breathing.

  • If not breathing, then Give 2 rescue breaths.

  • Check for pulse, If Pulse is Absent:

  • Remove clothing from victims upper torso.  Look for and remove any medication patches.  Wipe off excess medication.

  • Remove excessive chest hair using disposable razor or equivalent, if possible.

  • Position each electrode, as illustrated, firmly on the victims skin.  Avoid placement of electrodes on pacemakers.

  • Once connected to the victim Stand Clear - AED Will Analyze Victim.

  • If AED detects a shockable heart rhythm you will hear a "SHOCK ADVISED" and the AED will begin charging.

  • Stand Clear - Push Shock.

  • Remain Clear AED Will Re-Analyze - Follow AED Audible Directions.

  • If the AED Detects a non-shockable heart rhythm you will hear "NO SHOCK ADVISED" and the AED will not charge, then:

     

    • Provide basic life support until arrival of Emergency Response;

    • Closely monitor victims pulse, if no pulse is detected at any time begin CPR and return to above AED procedure.

     

  • DO NOT

    • Administer More then 3 Sets of 3 Shock Sequences to the Victim.

    • Move or Turn Off AED Until Emergency Response has Arrived.
